On this evidence, Jarvis Cocker has uncovered a rich, new seam – and he’s not afraid to turn it up to 11 when the situation demands.

Somehow, this late in the day, against all odds, Jarvis Cocker has got his groove back.

Minor missteps aside, Further Complications is a bold, progressive step forward in the so far, so very good solo career of Jarvis Cocker.

Whether he keeps on in this vein or branches out even further, this album proves you can, in fact, teach an old letch new tricks.

There are loud, clattering drums, oodles of reverb, saxophone solos, and a gang of butch male backing singers who gruffly agree with everything Jarvis is saying. Jarvis himself grunts and screeches like a horny, unreconstructed, hairy-chested rock prizefighter. It's as faux-1970s as Life on Mars.

Drowned In Sound
The heavier tracks serve a useful purpose as foil to more introspective moments; an album where every song contained the drama of 'slush' might buckle under its own weight, but the contrast between the two styles on Further Complications show that balls-to-the wall confession, not rock, is not where Cocker’s real talent lies

No Ripcord
An apt title for an frustrating mixed-bag of an album. Initial listens may lead you to believe it’s a little non-descript, but there’s reward in perseverance. Jarvis Cocker’s diversions into scuzzy riff-based rock and glam disco are to be encouraged and although it’s unclear where he’ll go from here, we’re certainly better off for having him around

When stretched to his limits, as he undoubtedly is here – and for this the singer deserves credit – it becomes clear that Jarvis is not, and never has been a garage rocker, a punk rocker or a country rocker.

This is a record that's more intriguing than entertaining. Cocker's warmth and wit are in short supply, as is the sweeter side of his melodic gifts.

With Cocker frequently shouting to be heard over the rock racket, Further Complications is best when the music quietens, allowing the singer's glorious one-liners to be savoured.
