Feels like a consolidation of every stride they've made to date. I'm still not sure if the word Mew means something in Danish or they're just named after something their cat said, but I'm ready to start using it as shorthand for quality prog-pop

  2. 8.0 |   Drowned In Sound

Big’ in every sense of the word, if it doesn’t quite reach the impassioned heights of Kites in terms of sheer spectacle, it certainly comes close; that it sees them confidently tread towards something warmer and intangibly more personal in its outlook more than compensates. Absolutely intoxicating.

  3. 8.0 |   NME

Always inventive, often beautiful and occasionally totally sublime

Following a few more rules makes Mew no less exhilarating.

  5. 8.0 |   The Sunday Times

For Mew, music is, first and last, an inexhaustible paintbox of sound. And boy, do they make you pay attention

  6. 8.0 |   PopMatters

Mew’s major weakness is vocals. While lead singer Jonas Bjerre occasionally meanders into Brian Wilson territory, he doesn’t possess the pipes to inhabit the rock world. Wisely, Mew emphasize the instrumentation in their songs, using vocals—which are normally reverbed to within an inch of their sonic lives—like another guitar rather than a leading element

  7. 8.0 |   Clash

Eternally blessed with Scandinavian pop sensibility, you’re soon dropped into a groundswell of emotive, shoegaze that’ll have your heart punch through its ribcag

  8. 7.0 |   No Ripcord

A different kind of monster: the songs drift with a whimper instead of expressing pompous declamations; what doesn’t change is that they still aim high.

  9. 7.0 |   musicOMH

As before, Mew's new work might just be a masterpiece; but then it might not be. It certainly holds lofty ambitions, but it doesn't connect as much as it could.
